SINGING AWAY YOUR WINTER BLUES
Why a Choir Might Be the Brightest Part of Your Season
Winter in Calgary can feel long, dark, and heavy. The sun sets early, the cold settles in, and many of us experience that familiar drop in energy and motivation. The “winter blues” are real — but so is one of the simplest, most joyful antidotes: singing.
At Out of the Blue Chorus, we believe in the power of singing in community — especially in the heart of winter!
“Singing is my way of expressing myself and releasing any pent-up emotions. It gives me the strength to face any situation.” — Adele
The Science Behind Singing Your Way to a Better Mood
Singing isn’t just fun (though it absolutely is). It triggers real physiological changes in the body that support emotional well-being:
Mood-boosting hormones: Singing releases endorphins and dopamine — two chemicals linked to happiness and motivation.
Stress reduction: Deep breathing, which happens naturally during singing, lowers cortisol levels. Many singers describe rehearsal as a “reset button.”
Connection: Group singing releases oxytocin, often called the bonding hormone. Even if you walk in feeling alone, you won’t feel that way for long.
That’s why choir members often say they leave rehearsal feeling better than when they arrived — lighter, energized, and more grounded.
Community: The Real Heart Medicine
There’s something uniquely powerful about being surrounded by people all doing the same thing: breathing together, blending, creating something bigger than themselves. In the middle of a Calgary winter, this kind of connection is priceless.
At OOTB, our rehearsals are designed to bring people together — not just musically, but socially. We laugh a lot. We support one another. We celebrate progress, and we make beautiful music in the process.
A Creative Outlet When You Need It Most
Winter can leave us feeling uninspired, but music sparks creativity. Even learning a new harmony or rhythm wakes up parts of the brain that help us feel more alive and engaged.
Many OOTB singers tell us their Tuesday night rehearsal is the highlight of their week. It becomes a routine that anchors them during a season that can bring challenges.
