Next Rehearsal - March 4th
We will start learning the classic groovy rock tune, ‘Your Mama Don’t Dance’. Jen McMillan - the voice/pianist behind all the practice recordings, crafted this arrangement specifically for OOTB Chorus, and it’s awesome! It’ll be a fun challenge while also help lock into a really fun groove together.
Sheet music will be available Sunday evening as we’re still making some small adjustments.
Songs from MemoryAs I mentioned Tuesday, we will now start working on singing our songs from memory in rehearsal.
Next week, I would to try Heartache Tonight, as well as Hallelujah & Down to the River from memory.
We’ve all felt how we can reach a new of cohesiveness and expressive power when we have our music memorized - so let’s do it!
Musical Moment
Here’s to Cover Songs! And a little Croc Rockin’
by, Brent Moore
Hey, do you like ‘cover songs’ as much as I do? Especially when they are so original, that they almost become a brand new tune! Sometimes, a cover tune can even make you forget the original entirely. For example, Tennessee Whiskey by Chris Stapleton, or All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix.
Speaking of covers, you could say that OOTB is one giant cover band. We may not have any guitars, but we sure have one heck of a piano player (yay Eileen!), no shortage of fine vocalists, and fantastic tunes. One of my favorites from the last Christmas Concert was ‘Stuck in the Middle With You’. A key element of a cover tune is the arrangement. Major kudos to Tyler for arranging that one, as it was sassy, fun, and yes, original!
This week, I want to introduce you to a superb cover of an OOTB song. It is by a roots rock outfit from Georgia called Larkin Poe, which is fronted by two sisters, Rebecca and Megan Lovell. They have gained recognition for their smooth harmonies, Megan’s dobro slide guitar, and Rebecca’s guitar riffs. The band name comes from their great-great-great-great-grandfather, Larkin Poe (a cousin of Edgar Allen Poe). I caught them at the New Orleans JazzFest, and they raised the roof with their raucous grooves and cool covers, including Crocodile Rock. This version below is oh-so-sweet. Hope you like!
