Week 22 Newsletter

March 22nd, 2024

A note from Tyler…

Thank you for a great rehearsal before Spring Break! Despite many absences, we made a big sound, built some exciting moments into our songs, and hit a beautifully cohesive stride in the second half when we came together and sang through songs from memory. We’ll continue to sit closer together when we resume rehearsals after the Tuesday, April 2nd break.

We didn’t get a chance to look at our newest song, ‘Mama Don’t Dance,’ as we were busy working on other things, so we’ll officially start this April 2nd when we’re back from spring break. It’s going to be fun :)

Announcements

  • There will be NO Rehearsal next week, March 26th, as it is our Spring Break. Regular rehearsals will resume on Tuesday, April 2nd.

  • There will be another newsletter sent this time next week with lots of info on important dates for the remainder of the choir season, a song list and other information about the concert on June 7th so we can start preparing accordingly, as well as some other important changes coming to OOTB Chorus.

Next Rehearsal - April 2nd

  • Next week’s newsletter will contain more information on what to expect and prepare for in our first rehearsal back from break.

  • Let’s come back together with guns a-blazing and voices soaring!

Musical Moment

The Greatest Night in Pop

by, Brent Moore

Remember the tune “We Are the World” from 1985? It featured 46 of the biggest music stars on the planet, including Michael Jackson, Lionel Ritchie, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Willie Nelson…, and even Bob Dylan. The purpose was to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia. However, only one night was available to make the record, and it wasn’t easy.

The song turned out to be a big success, selling over 20 million copies.  However, even more interesting is a current Netflix movie about how it all came together, called The Greatest Night in Pop.

So many moments - like Stevie Wonder trying to get them to sing lyrics in Swahili.  Or when Cyndi Lauper, who absolutely kills it, had to remove her huge jewelry ensemble to get her voice to record properly.  Bob Dylan was super uncomfortable and had everyone leave the studio except Stevie Wonder, who then coached Bob by doing a Dylan impersonation.  Springsteen also nails it, although his voice sounds a bit like a truckload of gravel.  This is understandable as he had just finished a big tour the night before with a four-hour concert.  Ultimately, producer Quincy Jones was able to capture enough magic for the tune as morning dawned.  Here is a trailer for the show – check it out!
