Week 28 Newsletter

May 6th, 2024

A note from Tyler…

Excellent rehearsal last week! We’re hitting our stride at the right time, and I’m excited to keep learning and growing until the end of what’s been a fun year with lots of new faces, experiences, and challenges—ones that we have risen to meet!

I also wanted to thank those who reached out on my birthday, May 3rd, with well wishes! It was a great weekend, and I felt very spoiled :)

Famous birthday moment…

I heard on the radio today that Bob Seeger turns 79! He’s one of my favourite singers, and I love the gritty quality of his songs and performances.

My Mom gave me a shirt from one of his concerts she saw in Toronto when I was in high school, and a love for rock tee shirts was born!

Announcements

  • Concert Promotion/Preparation

Our promotional material for our concert on June 7th (Facebook event page, shareable PDF version of our poster for the event, and live link to the Eventbrite page on our website where tickets will be available for purchase) will be ready to roll on Wednesday. We will send this out as part of our newsletter and the Concert Preparation Sheet we discussed a few weeks ago.

  • Chatter at Rehearsal

I want to address a concern that has been growing over the past few rehearsals—the level of chatter during our rehearsals. While I love the friendships and connections forming in your sections, I heard from multiple members after Tuesday’s rehearsal that the chatter around them, specifically while working with a section on the opposite side of the room, has become distracting and hinders learning and focus. There’s a lot of learning to be had listening to other sections work on their part, from hearing the music's different harmony lines and common rhythms to showing support for fellow singers in the other sections.

We are here to have a great time and learn songs for the upcoming concert as best we can! Our group's social aspect, a vital part of our choir community, is always welcomed at the rehearsal's start, end, and break times. Let's balance our social interactions with the learning moments of our rehearsals.

Next Rehearsal - May 7th

  • Continue learning ‘Teach Your Children,’ which we started last week. The rhythms and accuracy during the learning process of this song are essential to the tight harmonies.

  • Sheet Music for ‘Teach Your Children’: Tomorrow night, Peter will walk you through a few typos in the score.

  • In my absence, I’ve given Peter a map of things to work on for other songs.

Musical Moment

This Ain’t No Party,
This Ain’t No Disco.
By, Brent Moore

How about a super fun and highly kinetic number by the Talking Heads?  They helped pioneer New Wave music with their darker stylings of post-punk rock, mixed with white funkadelia and world-beat explorations.

This tune is from their concert movie ‘Stop Making Sense,’ hailed as one of the best concert movies ever. Their lead singer, David Byrne, was quite the character and then some….as you will see below. Talk about crazy energy – he could almost be a choir conductor.  Turn it up!

By the way, if you have a favourite musical moment or genre you would like to share for this space, please come and find me for a chat sometime during the rehearsal break. It would be great to hear from you!
